We can't learn if we don't feel safe. Literally.
A new food. A wrong answer in front of the class. To the brain, these can register as genuine danger — and when the amygdala sounds the alarm, it blocks new information from ever reaching the prefrontal cortex, where thinking and learning happen. That's not a kid being stubborn or difficult. That's an alarm system doing its job a little too well.
Empowering Focus teaches kids and their grown-ups how that system actually works — and how to work with it. Over six weeks we get to know the brain (amygdala, prefrontal cortex, hippocampus), learn what neurotransmitters do in the body, and map the levels of the autonomic nervous system we all move through every day.
And we learn it the way it sticks — through games, movement, and play. This isn't a lecture about the brain. It's kids feeling what regulation actually feels like in their own bodies, and having a good time while they do it.
What we practice together:
Mindfulness and regulation techniques that hold up in the moment
Listening to the body: learning how different feelings actually feel, so we catch our own cues sooner and more clearly
Identifying and reframing unhelpful or harmful thoughts
Addressing and solving interpersonal problems, so kids can build their own sense of safety
Co-regulation: steadying ourselves alongside other people, on purpose
All of it points at one question: what is actually getting in the way of focusing, following through, and growing? Kids leave knowing how to find the answer for themselves and what to do about it.
Empowering Focus Testimonials:
Annie's Brain Boost class was a great class for students who struggle with feelings and emotions in the school environment and gave excellent ideas/resources for the students. She also did a lot of fun/engaging activities that helped both the students and parents understand certain ideas. -parent

Every child can bring an adult along, free. It isn't required — but it's the part families tell us mattered most. When a grown-up learns it too, everyone leaves with a shared language for what's happening and what helps. Parents consistently tell us the class was just as useful for them as it was for their kid.
Best for: kids 7 and up — especially the ones who freeze up on anything new, feel things big, get called “too much” or “not enough,” or can't seem to follow through even when they want to.
